Jami, Paul, and I would like to share some info from the Web 2.0 SOLINET workshop in Arlington on March 20. With some time for interest and discussion, I would estimate this would take about 15 minutes. Comments on timing are welcome. Minutes have been posted to the L drive under Reference/Meeting Minutes/April 3, 2008 minutes
Microcard scanner:Â While I was at the reference desk, Carla and Jean were trying to figure out how to batch scan an 8-page document from the Early American imprints on the microcard reader. It was tough going . . .and if they were struggling they afraid that students are struggling too. They asked me to add an item about the microcard reader to the Reference agenda. I guess their question is what can be done to make the directions more prominent and easy to follow? Can the batch scanning feature be set up and explained. As it it now, it appears as though you have to scan a document page by page to separate files and when you print them out, it prints one page with the image plus two blank pages.
Will we have a summer project that we would like to have a Reference Aide stay and work for?
Microcard Scanner:
Beth has alerted Tim about this. Perhaps Tim and/or Tom can see what they can do about the problem and update us at the next staff meeting. I think that this problem involves everyone down here on the first floor.
Reference Aide:
I really doubt that we will have a summer student aide in reference. I think that we could assign projects to Stephanie and Karen if we have any.
In light of the budget problems and with very little to do during the daytime hours, I would like to talk about about decreasing our student aides from 5 to 4 for the fall semester.
1) Summer projects. Christie is working on a full-time librarian, part-time librarian, and student aide training manual. I know that she is addressing duties for part-time librarians in it, and these duties could also involve summer projects. (We need to utilize the talents of our part-time librarians.)
2) Student aides. I think decreasing the number of student aides is an excellent idea. They simply do not have much to do during the day (and I always appreciate it when they actively ask and look for things to do).
I spoke with Christie this morning and will just add here that I would be interested in sharing an aide with Reference again, as we did with Laura’s position first semester. This way the student works half to 2/3 of their time for me in the day and you have them for nights and weekends. A win win solution. With the Digital Archives project in Special Collections, I can use additional student hours.
Justin is interested in working this summer if we do have a job.
Another agenda item (we may want to hold this for the next meeting, when Donna is available to discuss it)
“Access My Library” from Gale Cenage
Seems to be similar to Google Scholar in that it puts search results from Gale databases into Google results and allows our users to authenticate directly through to the full text, if we sign up.
Here are FAQs for librarians:

I’d like to talk about the new purchase request form.
Also, I think we need to meet in Simpson 225 today so that I can show the form and in case Charlotte, Paul or I need to show a site during our discussion of the SOLINET workshop.
